WHAT IS MASSAGE THERAPY?

Touch is the basic underlying foundation of massage therapy. Hands, and other parts of the body such as forearms or elbows, are used to manipulate the soft tissues (skin, muscles, tendons, ligaments) of the body. The results vary greatly depending on each individual, their needs, and the goals of the client working together with the therapist.

TYPES OF MASSAGE

Reflexology

Reflexology is also an excellent therapy to reduce stress and induces deep relaxation. In a world where stress cannot be avoided, this is the perfect treatment to unwind and re-connect with your inner calm. Reflexology can also assist in stress related health conditions, including hormonal imbalance and skin conditions.

Relaxation Massage

Relaxation massage is a gentle, flowing type of massage that promotes relaxation, reduces both mental and physical stress, improves circulation, and relieves muscular tension. The touch is generally light to medium pressure and the therapist will often create a calm, warming, ambient environment for clients to unwind in.

Deep Tissue Massage

Deep tissue massage is a type of massage therapy that focuses on realigning deeper layers of muscles. It is used for chronic aches and pain and contracted areas such as a stiff neck and upper back, low back pain, leg muscle tightness, and sore shoulders. Some of the strokes are the same as those used in classic massage therapy, but the movement is slower and the pressure is deeper and concentrated on areas of tension and pain in order to reach the sub-layer of muscles and the fascia (the connective tissue surrounding muscles).

Remedial Massage

Remedial massage seeks to assess and treat neuromusculoskeletal (the interactions between nerves, muscles and the skeleton) dysfunction using more advanced techniques than relaxation massage. The main aim of remedial massage is to reduce or prevent pain and to promote or restore motion. Remedial therapist use a variety of techniques such as trigger point therapy, myofascial release and joint articulation.

Manual Lymphatic Massage

Manual lymphatic drainage is a very gentle massage technique used to stimulate the flow of lymphatic fluid (‘lymph’) – around your body. Using specific slow, light strokes, manual lymphatic drainage works on the connective tissues immediately below the skin (not the deeper muscles like remedial massage). By promoting fluid circulation and decongesting the lymph nodes, manual lymphatic drainage helps boost the immune system and detoxify the body. Manual lymphatic drainage can help treat a wide range of health conditions and illnesses.

Pregnancy Massage

Pregnancy Massage or prenatal massage is the ultimate relaxation experience during any stage of pregnancy. It uses various relaxing techniques to nurtures the expectant mother and creates a harmonious environment for the developing embryo. Prenatal massages may not only help you relax, but may also relieve insomnia, joint pain, neck and back pain, leg cramping, and sciatica. Additionally, it can reduce swelling in your hands and feet (as long as that swelling isn’t a result of preeclampsia), relieve carpal tunnel pain, and alleviate headaches and sinus congestion — all common pregnancy problems.

Kahuna Massage 

Kahuna bodywork originated on the islands of the south Pacific. In ancient times it was performed in the heiu (temples) and was administered to people in transitional phases of their lives as a rite of passage and a tool for deep physical and spiritual healing. This is a graceful, in depth bodywork which incorporates hula movements to produce a profound healing effect for the recipient, whilst energising the practitioner. Massage therapists use their forearms, hands and elbows and ‘dance’ fluidly around the table massaging the body literally from top to toe to facilitate healing on a mental, emotional and spiritual level.

Hot Stone Massage

Ili ili Stones combines the Hawaiian Lomi Lomi with the hot stones to create a deep experience of relaxation. This beautiful treatment addresses the many levels of healing necessary to restore balance in the body, mind and soul. It combines the long rhythmic strokes of Hawaiian style massage with the gliding of hot stones along the body.

Thai Massage

Thai Massage is a traditional healing system combining acupressure, Indian Ayurvedic principles, and assisted yoga postures. Thai Massage was developed by Buddhist Monks 2500 year ago and uses gentle and/or strong pressure and stretching techniques help to open up the body and relieve tension to maximise relaxation.
